Dell 490 E-sata?

I have a Dell 490 and I am trying to use 2 eSATA 500gb Seagate drives
in Antec MX-1 cases as RAID 0. I have set this up in the RAID BIOS as
the 1st 2 drives non RAID that the last 2 as RAID. Windows XP Pro
detects all drives and formated all drives. I realize this is a
windows VISTA newsgroup but I saw a lot of good advice here. I have 2
internal SATA HDs one for the OS and programs and the 2nd blank for
Premiere Pro scratch disk. Right now I am having lock up problems. I
just wanted to make sure I have this set up correctly. I have the
external drives non jumpered set for 3.0 G/s access. I am pluging the
included adapter cables into the onboard SATA ports. I don't know if
the ports are SATA I or SATA II. The BIOS states that AHCI BIOS is not
installed. I have BIOS setup for RAID/AHCI if no RAID. I have 3
setting to choose from in the BIOS, RAID/AHCI, RAID/ATA or always boot
RAID. Or something like that. I am not sure which setting I should
use.
Dell's manual states that to install a 3rd HD in the case I need to
install a metal shield to counter act interference. Do I need to worry
about this with the extenal drives?

Anything else you can think of?

Thanks in advance for your help,

John

External hard drive enclosures are to be used for file
backups/storage only. You cannot use them to run
an operating system.

Yes, I am not sure exactly what you mean. I have the OS installed on
an intenal drive. Right now my Dell 490 says AHCI BIOS not installed.
Dell Support said to reinstall the OS with the external drives
disconnected. This seems to have gotten the OS and drivers to
install. But when I try to plug in the external drives I get a stop
error 0x0000007B. From reading around it might have to do with AHCI
not being installed. But, I do not know how to install it.
