Is is safe to delete the files in the windows directory
that start $ntuninstall (they are usually hidden). I do
realize that by deleting them I will not be able to later
to use the uninstall feature in the add/remove programs
for them.

Thanks

If you wish to safely remove the "uninstall files" for the
Hotfixes (i.e. $NtUninstallQxxxxxx$ files shown in Windows Explorer)
and cleanup your Add/Remove Programs list, visit MS-MVP Doug Knox's
excellent website for instructions.

Remove Hotfix Backup files and the Add/Remove Programs Registry entries

Quite safe - check each at
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;nnnnnn
to match the number to confirm what they were for. If you then try the
corresponding Add/Remove, it will fail, and offer to remove the entry
there
