deleting Windows 98

I purchased the FULL Windows XP Home Edition. My
computer now gives me the choice upon booting up to work
in Windows 98 or XP. I don't want or need 98 any longer
so I want to take that off my machine. As it is right
now, working in XP, I frequently get the message that I
am running on low disc space and I'm sure that is because
I've run out of room with both operating systems. Does
anyone have any suggestions?

Donna,

There is a "boot.ini" file in the root directory of your C: drive. Open it
in Notepad.
Figure out the windows directories for your Win98 and WinXP systems.

If the directories are the same, then Win98 is not really there.
Delete the line from boot.ini and save it.
Plan to get a new, bigger hard drive.

If both are on the C drive, delete the windows directory for Win98.

If WinXP is on C and Win98 is elsewhere, delete everything on the Win98
partition.

If Win98 is on C and WinXP is elsewhere, you may delete the Windows
directory for Win98, and
(judiciously) most or all of the other directories on C. Do not try to move
WinXP.

My guess is you should plan to get a new bigger hard drive (or perhaps a new
computer) in any case.

If you installed with a dual boot and XP in another partition, it is
important to retain the boot files, which are in C with Win98. Keep the
files in the root of that (hidden ones)
ntldr
boot.ini
ntdetect.com
and you can delete all other files from that partition. Then if in XP
you go to a Start - Run - MSConfig
and on the BOOT.INI page click 'check all Paths it will find the Win98
one is no longer valid and offer to delete it.

You can then move data into this partition, or resize it down and
exp[and the XP one using third party software such as BootIT NG, from
http://www.BootitNG.com ($35 shareware - 30 day full functional trial)
