deleting tasks

P

Peter Jordan

Hello:

I run Windows 2000, and have the following tasks running.
I would appreciate knowing, first, whether I can safely
get rid of them, and, second, how to do so:

ocrawr32.exe
ocraware.exe
winoldap.mod
wowexec.exe
pctspk.exe
MSTask.exe
tsircusr.exe
DirectCD.exe
ACMonitor_X83.exe (I am not currently using a Lexmark
printer)
AcBtnMgr_X83.exe
IPClient.exe (I am not currently using Verizon DSL)
IPMon32.exe
MotiveSB.exe (this may be Verizon spyware -- does anyone
know how to delete it?)
rsvp.exe (this apparently has something to do with
netmeeting, but I can't get rid of it).

At least one of the above tasks is apparently responsible
for the fact that my PC periodically comes to a near
standstill for maybe as much as a minute. My suspicion is
that it's sending stuff to someone. (I've run Ad-Aware,
by the way, but it still does this grinding to a halt).

Would appreciate any assistance.

Thanks,

Peter Jordan

I have tried that -- the three tasks of which I'm most
suspicious are MotiveSB.exe, IPClient.exe, and
IPMon32.exe, but I don't know how to get rid of them. I
just found out from a previous post how to track them down
through Start\Settings\Control Panel\Administrative
Tools\Computer
Management(Local)\System Information\Software
Environment\Startup
Programs|View|Advanced

But what do I do once I've found them out? Everybody says
to be *CAREFUL* about messing with registry settings. How
do I safely get rid of these things?

Try searching them out here. http://www.google.com/

Start\Settings\Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Computer
Management(Local)\System Information\Software Environment\Startup
Programs|View|Advanced, then in the "Location" column, you'll find the path
to the "Startup" location either in the "Startup" directories or from the
registry's "Run" keys.

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

You can delete the shortcuts that you no longer want to run.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You can delete the string value for the program you no longer want to run.

Thanks -- please bear with me one more time. I'm not a CS
major. I have found the offending programs by following
the instructions below. But now that I know how to find
MotiveSB.exe (for example), how do I get rid of it? It
doesn't give me "delete" as an option when I rightclick it.
You say I can "delete the shortcuts that you no longer
want to run." How, specifically, do I *do* that? Where
do I go to "delete the string value for the program you no
longer want to run"? Are these alternatives, or do I take
*both* cryptic steps?

Thanks once more.

Can you post the string found in the "Location" column?

Location information posted below

(Is there a way for me to have simply dragged across this
stuff and copied it? I wrote it to a text file, opened
Notepad, copied it, and pasted it below -- does Windows
allow anything simpler without a third party program like
Snag-It? I have the same question about the list of Tasks
that comes up in Task manager)

(Another question: What should I have searched for in
Win2K help to find the answer to my question about how to
get Windows to stop starting programs when it boots up?)

Run regedit.exe, navigate to;
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and delete the string value;
"Motive SmartBridge"="c:\progra~1\verizo~1\suppor~1\smartb~1\motivesb.exe"
