deleting old contacts in address book

I have several contacts I've deleted yet when I type an email, they come back
as a choice to select as to who to send it to. Why do they not go away and
how would I make them go away; I no longer want them. They no longer reside
in my address book but come back to haunt each time I type To: They're in
the selection. Why is that? Please help! Oneclick
