Suddenly, when deleting highlighted text, Word asks me:

Delete Block?? No(Yes)

How is it possible to remove this extraneous query and return the program to
instantly deleting highlighted text when the delete button is pressed??

In Word, click on Tools | Options | General | uncheck the two
boxes for WordPerfect help and navigation | OK.

Clear the check marks next to the options referring to WordPerfect on
the General tab of Tools | Options.

I've been a WordPerfect user for years and that made no sense to me. Thank
you, I never would have guess at the connection!
