Deleting HD partition without having to reinstall XP?

Mike Parker

When I originally formatted my HD, I set up a primary
drive C w/ 1.5g of space and a drive D w/123.5g of
space. I didn't pay attention during setup, so now XP
and almost all program files are installed into the very
small C drive. Now I keep getting messages telling me my
available drive space is critically low even though D
drive is almost completely empty. Is there a way to
either transfer XP and all files to drive D, or to remove
the partition between them so I only have one 15g drive?

You'll need to start over from scratch. A 1.5GB partition is
not adequate for Windows XP. I suggest making your Windows XP
installation partition no less than 10GB.

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition(s), then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

7. It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.
After XP is installed, visit the support website of the manufacturer
of each hardware device to obtain the latest drivers or software
designed to work with Windows XP.

You are giving us ambiguous information. First you say that Drive D: is
123.5 gig. Then you say you want to remove the partition between C: and D:
so you will have a 15 gig drive. WTF?

What is it you really want to do?

with all due respects to Nicholas. you really can repartion an existing
drive. partition magic also makes this tool but it's pricey. 150-200 bucks
i think.

SORRY!! My fat fingers... Drive C is 1.5g, Drive D is
13.5g, my physical HD is a total of 15g. I need to
either move all WinXP files to drive D or remove the
partition between C and D. Win XP is now installed on my
1.5g partitioned drive C, so I can't even download any
updates because they won't install. Not enogh free space
on drive C, where WinXP and all program files originally
installed to. I can't just drag and drop to drive D
because Windows is using the files and won't move them.
I'm trying to get around having to reinstall WinXP on
drive D as a new installation.

You can use Partition Magic 8.0 to resize your Drive D: downward (be sure to
create the free space at the beginning of D:

Then, you can resize drive C: upward using the freed up space.

I do things like this all the time.

Acording to the site you provided the software to which you refer is
$49.99 and not "free". That's the same price if not more expensive that
Partition Magic.
