I know this is a stupid question, but can I safely delete files under the
Windows File that begin with a $ sign no matter how large they are?
And what are these files?
Thanks

Yes and no. Do _not_ remove the $hf_mig$ folder. It's needed for future
updates.

Those with the format, $NtUninstallKxxxxxx$ are uninstall folders for
updates from windows update. The KB number corresponds to the knowledge
base article number for that update. If you remove a folder, the update can
no longer be removed from Windows. If the update has been on the system for
some time and things are working fine, then you should probably not need to
delete it in the future so the risk from deleting those uninstall folders is
small. As a precaution you can copy them to CD first.

I wait at least one month till the next month's updates come out then
delete, but if you have the space then leave them. Doug Knox has a utility
on his web site to automate the removal of these folders and their entries
in Add/Remove programs.

Like what the other person wrote. I agree you should leave the entire folder
structure alone because if you delete the wrong one there is no going back.

Before anything is said: System Restore isn't all that it's cracked up to be
either.
