Deleting Files

My hard drive crashed thus after putting in new one, I re-installed Win XP
SP2 and all current updates.
My problem is now when I want to delete a file from a diskette, CD-RW, or
Flash drive, I get an error message that the file is being used by another
program and to close it so I can delete the file. Well, I have no programs
open other than Windows Explorer to access the diskette or what ever.
I never had this problem before unless I was actually using that particular
program associated with file I was trying to delete.
Is there a setting I need to adjust in XP? I'm only user of PC & I have
Admin. rights as I've checked.
Help be appreciated.

AVI files?

Avi files have a bug in XP. XP thinks that it has to read through every avi
file every time that you open a folder that contains any. You also get the
locked file in use when trying to delete, rename, move, etc. avi files.

See this on the fix.

How to get rid of "Locked AVI" Bug in Windows XP
http://riccardo.raneri.it/blog/eng/...w-to-get-rid-of-locked-avi-bug-in-windows-xp/

The only down side to the above fix is that when you right click an avi file
and select Properties, the Summary page will be blank or grayed out.
---------

You can also try killing explorer and restarting it.

To kill explorer and restart it.

Open the Task Manager...
Ctrl + Shift + Escape | Click on the Processes tab | Locate and highlight
explorer.exe | Right click explorer.exe | Click End Process | Click
Yes to the Task Manager Warning that pops up | Click File on the Toolbar |
Click New Task (Run...) | Type in: explorer | Click OK

End Process on explorer.exe will make your Desktop, Taskbar and all programs
disappear. This can be startling. Restarting explorer will bring
everything back.

This can fix/restore/reinitialize/refresh a lot of things.

Hello, Has this had some sort of a partial fix from Microsoft?
Reason I ask, When I right click on a .AVI file the screen blacks out and
then returns with the ability to move, delete or copy and use all properties
of the file. I assume this removes then restarts Explorer. I do not remember
installing a repair for this problem.
take care.

Not that I know of. But that doesn't mean anything. ;-)
I assume this removes then restarts Explorer

You'd see an Event ID: 1002 Source: Winlogon event in the Event Viewer...
The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.

Of course there are many things that can cause that particular error.

I just bit the bullet when I had some large .avi files and made the change.
I didn't care about the Summary page being blank or grayed out. Compared to
the other hassles, that's small potatoes.

Export the InProcServer32 key first, save it as InProcServer32.reg. More
below.

Then try this.

disable this function from the Windows System Registry:
Click on “Start” > “Run…”, type REGEDIT and press enter;
Browse the registry following this path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC
73E}\InProcServer32
Delete the entire “InProcServer32” key (displayed as a folder)
from...
http://riccardo.raneri.it/blog/eng/...w-to-get-rid-of-locked-avi-bug-in-windows-xp/

If you do not like it, merge the backed up key by double clicking on
InProcServer32.reg and clicking Yes to the prompt. Or right click on
InProcServer32.reg, click on Merge and click Yes to the prompt.

To Export the key...
Open the Registry Editor...
Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |
Navigate to this key...
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC
73E}\InProcServer32

1. Right click on the InProcServer32 folder in the left hand pane and click
on
Export.
2. Export Registry File dialog should open.
3. Click on the Desktop icon on the Places Bar (the left hand pane).
4. Type: InProcServer32 in the File name box.
5. The Save as type should default to .reg
6. Click the Save button.
7. Close the Registry Editor.

Then you can move InProcServer32.reg where ever you want. Or just navigate
to where you want to save the file using the Save in box at the top of the
Export Registry File dialog

Hello, Printed your reply will try on a backup unit.
As it is when right clicking on a .avi file the screen blacks out then
reappears with the drop down menu, all links on the drop down menu including
"properties" are active. No event listed in "Event Viewer".
I probably found some type of "repair" installed then forgot about doing so.
Did a install of "IESpell" forgot about doing so until I installed IE7 and
there it was on the tool bar and right click in text boxes.
Thank You for the information.
take care.

I used ShellXView to get rid of all of the Nvidia crap. ;-)
