I am trying to delete files from web site on my ISP and keep getting
cannot delete file not empty- opening a file I have _vtl_cmf and trying
to delete these I have the same message.

The only advice my ISP has given is try a different FTP prog which I
have done to no avail

I simply want to delete the files and start again - can anyone help?

If your website is FP extension enabled (sounds like it is), then you should not use FTP program to upload. You should be using FP's File | Publish Web/Site via http://yourwebsite.com

Messing with _vti_* files is not a good idea, they are the extensions. Using FTP programs will also break the extensions. You're extensions are probably broken now. You can have the host reinstall them, then re-Publish your site back up to the server.

Rob,
Can you please explain what you mean by saying "FTP
programs"? I am learning a great deal from this newsgroup,
and I know that somewhere along the many posts, there's an
explanation, but it would sure help keep me from digging
through the hundreds of them, if you could help explain.
I'm still awaiting owrd from my host to see if the FP
extensions are on my website. In the meantime..I read and
learn from these other problems folks have, in case I ever
need the same advise.

thanks so much!

Can you post a link to your site??
Then someone can check to see if extensions are installed.

If extensions are installed, you need to publish to http://yourwebsitname.com and *not* to
ftp.yourwebsitename.com

If extensions are installed you can open the web on the server using FrontPage, and delete files
directly from the server.
However, you really shouldn't need to, because if you delete a file from your "local web" and then
"Publish" using http:// FrontPage will ask if you want to delete the same file on the server as it
is publishing your updates.

Ok.
Hello from Jax. ;-)

Your server shows as having FrontPage extensions installed:
Server: Apache/1.3.27 (Unix) (Red-Hat/Linux) FrontPage/5.0.2.2626

Also, the extensions configuration file is present when checking as follows:
http://www.jaxharmony.com/_vti_inf.html

So, to publish your web, Click File > Publish web ( Publish Site in FP 2003 ) and then enter the
location as http://www.jaxharmony.com or
http://jaxharmony.com and FrontPage should publish it just fine.

To open the remote site in FrontPage, click File > Open web and enter http://www.jaxharmony.com or
http://jaxharmony.com

If it doesn't work correctly have your host reset / restore the FrontPage extensions and then try.
Do *not* use ftp://jaxharmony.com as it will "break" the extensions again.

same name which is why I have been on this newsgroup
frantically trying to learn so I can get it published to
my own machine! LOL!
thanks!! I MAY be back!! ;-)

Steve,
I am trying to get the website to publish to my own
computer first so I can work on the pages instead of the
live site. So far, I have been unable to do that since it
keeps giving me an error message about gifs with the same
name. Because the files appear to be host files, I am
unable to rename them. And I'm still waiting for the
support to get back in touch with me. I have asked that
they check the extensions and to reset if needed. So
far..havent' gotten much joy from them! LOL!
So..when I open FP > File > Publish web. It gives me a
dialogue box that says Publish FROM jaxharmony.com and
then a blank box to fill in the location I wish to save TO
on my computer. THAT'S when I get the error message. I
have YET to be able to save a copy on my own computer.
Once I do, then I'll be able to edit there and publish
back to the remote site(jaxharmony.com)

I just need the support folks' help.

thanks for yours though!

Create a new empty folder on your computer, somewhere where it's easy to find and give it a name.

Browse to it in FrontPage using File > Open Web, when you get to it, right click on it, and then
Select "convert to web" from The FrontPage right click Context Menu.

Click File Close web.

Then click File > Open web and enter http://www.jaxharmony.com and log in.
Then click File "Publish Web" and point FrontPage to your newly made "empty" web folder and select
Publish.

those vti_ folders shouldn't be touched - they are to do with the server
extension functionality and are required.

FTP - "File Transfer Protocol" it is an application that copies the files from
your computer to the web server.
