deleting DNS zones

S

Slimline

I've got 2 2003 AD servers and whenever I reboot one of them I get the
following event viewer warning:

"The zone mydomain.net was previously loaded

"The zone mydomain.net was previously loaded from the directory partition
MicrosfotDNS but
another copy of the zone has been found in directory partition
DomainDNSZones.mydomain.net.
The DNS server will ignore this new copy of the zone."

Upon further investigation I found that in my Forward Lookup Zones directory
I have 2 zones:

mydomain.net
_msdcs.mydomain.net

I only created one (mydomain.net) so I went ahead and deleted the one
beginning with _msdcs.
Was this the right way to solve the above warning? It didn't resolve the
warning and in fact added a couple others.
Can anyone clue me in on what's happening here?

Don't delete that zone. Windows Server 2003 automaticaly creates
_msdc.domain.com forward zone in your DNS server. This is a change from W2k
(for replication optimization). Try recreating your _msdc.domain.com forward
zone and restart the server, so that it reregisters its records.

It addition to the previous post:

When you recreate the zone make it ad integrated and replicate to DNS
servers in the same forest.

It sounds like the DNS zone may have been created on both DC's at around the
same time then collided during AD replication. You may have 2 objects with
the same name. When this happens one of the objects get renamed and a number
will get appended to it.

In 2003 the DNS zones are stored in application partitions. Use adsiedit.msc
to look in cn=partitons,cn=configuration and see if you have more than one
zone with the name of your domain. If you have one with a number appended to
it then you can delete it.
