Deleting Cookies in IE6

G

Guest

Hi,
Is there anyway to prevent certain cookies from being deleted when you go to
"Tools", "Internet Options", "Temporary Internet Files" and then click on
"Delete Cookies" in Internet Explorer 6?
When I delete all of the cookies, then I have to log in again on a lot of
web sites. If I didn't delete the cookies for these web sites, I wouldn't
have to keep logging in on these sites.

Thanks

Hi jslow :)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, which really is a
must when asking for help in the newsgroups, but, try the following and see
if it helps:

In IE go to Tools > Internet Options > General tab (the first one) > click
on Settings > click on View Files.

Select only the cookies you wish to keep, then go to Edit menu and choose
'Invert Selection'. This will select everything *except* the cookies you
want to keep. Delete the selection and, you're done.

And.... here are some free utilities that can help:

The cookies Manager
http://home.nordnet.fr/~pmdevigne/CookiesManager_e.html
or
Cookie Viewer v3.3
http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptcookie.asp
How to Set and Customize Cookies Settings in Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q196955

Hope this helps.

Hi Jan,
Thanks for the reply.
I read another post where the gentleman was asking if there was anyway to
get the IE6 cookies back after deleting them.
I was wondering the same thing.
From a back up image of my C Drive, I can get the following:
Temporary Internet Folder.
If I open this folder, I get:
Content.IE5 folder and Desktop.ini.
If I open the Content.IE5 folder, I get an index.dat file.

Is there anyway of recovering cookies from this data?

Thanks
P.S. I am running Windows XP Pro, SP2 and Internet Explorer 6.

Hi jslow :)
Hi Jan,

I read another post where the gentleman was asking if there was anyway to

No...not from the hard drive if you have used the computer or done a repair
or such since you deleted them. You *may* be able to recover them using one
of the recovrey companies that might be able to do that, but, it is very
expensive, so if they are not life and death or very valuable, then just
revisit the websites and create new cookies.

If you did an image of your entire hard drive, then you would have also
imaged your User folders as well. Is that correct? There should be a
folder in your User file called Cookies. Mine are located here in XP Pro
C:\Documents and Settings\<my Username>\Cookies

If you didn't delete them before you imaged your drive, then check in your
User folders in the Cookies folders and see if there are any Cookies there.
Not all cookies are deleted when you clear the Temporary Internet files. Go
to Tools>Internet Options>General tab> look in the Temporary Internet Files
area and click on Settings>View Files. Scroll down until you see cookie
files. These are the ones that get deleted when you clear the TIFs.

See the information here in regards to Cookies and how they work.
Description of Cookies
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;260971

also..... if you want to be more selective about your cookie handling click
the
Advanced button. Put a check in the box to over ride the automatic cookie
handling. Then select how you want to handle cookies. Don't forget to
click apply when you have selected the settings you want.

and here are a couple of utility programs that might be of interest a wll:
The cookies Manager
http://home.nordnet.fr/~pmdevigne/CookiesManager_e.html
Cookie Viewer v3.3
http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptcookie.asp

Now...if you *really* want to back up your Cookies, use this free utility:
BackRex - Internet Explorer Backup - Free Download
http://www.backsettings.com/internet-explorer-backup.html
Backs up all IE files, including
Favorites
Proxy & connection settings
Security zones
User customizations
Cookies
History
Dialup accounts
Form Autocomplete entries

......and if you use Outlook Express, here is one for it too:
Outlook Express Backup programs
www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/)

I use them both and really like them.

Hope this helps.

Manually Delete all the cookies you don't want.
Use IE's File | Import and Export to export the cookies.
Now you can delete all cookies any time you want and import the ones you
want.

Hi Jan,
Thanks again for the reply.

I found, in my back up image, the cookie files that I was looking for. As
you suggested, they were in my C:\ Documents & Settings\(My User Name)\
Cookies.

I just copied the cookie files that I wanted from my back up image to the
above location and that returned me to what I had before I deleted the
cookies.

Thanks again for your help.

You're very welcome! I'm glad to hear you were able to resolve your
problem. Good job!

It's a good rule of thumb to always back up important data and settings. You
just never know when you'll need them. :)

Thank you very much for posting back and letting us know what worked for
you, and for the benefit of other readers who might have a similar problem.
