Deleting a text box, and the drawing canvas

T

Tom Smith

Word XP under Win 2K pro.

I've inserted a text box, which I'm using for the first time, and which I
filled in, but now don't want to use it. I cannot for the life of me figure
out how to delete it.

Also: why does a drawing canvas appear when I insert a text box? How are the
two to be used in tandem--and particularly what does the canvas provide that
the text box alone wouldn't. And can the canvas be deleted?

Thanks in advance for your help. Tom

Hi Tom

To delete the text box, click on its edge so the sizing handles appear on
its corners and edges, then press the Delete key.

To prevent the drawing canvas from appearing, go to Tools > Options > View
and uncheck the option to show the canvas when inserting drawing objects.
(Word considers the text box to be a type of drawing object.)

The canvas doesn't really add any useful function to text boxes. When you're
dealing with other drawing objects, it gives you an easy way to group them
and move them together. I think it appears with text boxes only because
they're drawing objects and no exception was made for them.

Jay--Your advice worked perfectly--I'm always thinking I should click inside
the box, or that there should be an item on the toolbar. Thanks. And also
thanks for the guidance regarding the drawing canvas. Tom
