Deleted user - taking ownership of files

T

Tad

I accidently removed myself from the user list and can no
longer access my info in money or outlook. Someone here
said I might be able to create a new user and then take
ownership of these files. Does anyone know the proper way
to do this? I'm a novice (obviously) and can't seem to
figure it out. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank You.

Presuming you still have access to the Admin account, use it initially:

Create the new user, Take ownership of the files; give Full Control of these
files
to the new user, logon as the new user and again take ownership of the
files.

Common misconception: "Only Admins can take ownership" (by default)
Truth: "Only Admins can take ownership of arbitrary files, but anyone with
Full Control
of a file can perform security functions on that file which includes taking
ownership.

Thanks Herb.

This may seem elementary, but could you tell me how one
goes about the actual taking ownership of a deleted user's
files? I can't seem to find the magic switch.

Thanks again,

Tad

It's elementary if you KNOW where, but can be hard to find.

Right click on the files (or parent directory) and bring up the properties
for Security -- IF you are an Admin or have enough authority, one of
the choices is to take ownership (it varies a bit by OS but it's pretty
obvious once you get to the File/Security properties.)
