I recently had to reformat hard drive. Reloaded software and Office 2003.
Copied saved pst files to Outlook.
As I used Outlook, I noticed that the number of files shown to be in the
deleted items folder by a blue number enclosed in () did not correspond to
the actual number of files in the folder.

I ran Detect and Repair. Now there is no () and no number regardless of
folder contents.

I am running Windows Live One Care.

OK. So I sent myself a test e-mail, and deleted it without opening it. A
blue parenthesis enclosing the number one quickly appeared and disappeared.
The test e-mail was still in the deleted items folder unopened.

PS Thanks for the help.

The blue number corresponds to the amount of unread items not the total
items.

Addendum to last: Actually the test file opened itself on deletion. Say
wha?

How does that happen? And how do I turn that off?

Champaigne for the answer.
