is there a way to see your recently deleted files?
Because I have heard that they can stay on your system a
long time after you delete them.

Once a file is "deleted" from the recycle bin, it actually still exisits.
Windows just marks that drive space as empty and allows something else to
overwrite that part of the drive. Untill it gets overwritten the files can
be retrieved with a thrid party undelete program. The gov(fbi, nsa) can
recover just about anything off your drive, sometimes even after a format.
