Deleted emails not going to deleted folder

When I delete an email it does not go to the delted items folder. It was
until a couple of days ago. Can anyone advise as to what caused the deleted
items to simply vanish instead of appearing in deleted items?

Thanks.
 
Do they vanish immediately or only after closing Outlook? Also, you're not
hitting Shift-Delete to delete them, are you?
