delete Word files but just got multiple copies

I tried to delete some Word files from my C drive but just got multiple
copies entitled "Copy (2) of a copy of a copy of (then file name)" right
through to my latest "Copy (18) of a copy of etc". There are already multiple
copies clogging up my C drive like a cancer.

Last time this happened I had well over a hundred copies and just kept
trying to delete them and eventually after over an hour they did eventually
stay deleted (but I don't know why they suddenly did).
 
I have the exact same problem. Everytime I delete the copy it prints another
one. Can someone please help us?
