If this is XP Home, try from Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode, boot the
computer into Safe Mode. Do this by repeatedly tapping the F8 key as the
computer is starting up. This will get you to the right menu. Navigate
using your Up arrow key; the mouse will not work here.

This is XP Pro. Cannot delete in safe mode or diagnostic mode. This key is
the first key in ENUM so the device manager is blank. Tried to do a restore
point back to a week earlier, no help. Tried to do an inplace OS repair,
stops at 33 minutes, log reports unable to read Enum. Found this key, that I
can not delete as there is no security tab. If possible it looks like my only
choice is to somehow export the registry, which will not export this key
because it does not have permissions, then load up the new exported registry.
I have searched for days and have not found anyway to delete this key. Or if
I could edit a restore point registry and then restore it that way. Not sure
how to continue at this point. I purchase a case with Microsoft, but the 3
techs I talked to had less knowledge about this problem than I do. I have
tried there fixes which were basic stuff and no help. I am at a loss here.
Any suggestions would be helpful.

I don't think there is any point in trying to delete this registry key.
If your Repair Install fails (and it is probably at 34 minutes), then
there is a strong probability of bad hardware.

Setup stops responding with 34 minutes remaining -

I would start doing some extensive hardware testing before worrying
about deleting registry keys.

If you're worried about data that wasn't backed up, pull the drive and
slave it in another machine.

Not a hardware problem. Did a parallel install. No problem. I need to delete
this key.

Then take ownership. I don't know why you can't but maybe that's because
you keep doling out tiny bits of important information in a long string
of posts instead of just including it all at once. So I really can't
guess the state of that operating system. If you have XP Pro, don't
forget to turn off Simple File Sharing so you get the security tab. Then
use the Advanced button to change the ownership.

How Do I Get the Security tab in Folder Properties? -

Or try something like ERD Commander or a Bart's PE and delete the key
from outside the OS.

Good luck and EOT for me.

See if the following KB article helps as it shows how to copy registry files
from System Restore snapshots to restore the registry. I have done it
several times with good results for systems with registry corruption
problems.

I do not have any system restore points, Microsoft suggested I do an inplace
repair and it remove previous restore points.

As my previous post, I can not take ownership, the key gives me an error,
unable to display security information. It does not give me the option to
take ownership.
I have access to the security tab for the file system. I have ran subinacl
on the registry to take ownership, to set Adminitrator to full and system to
full, bu it will no allow me to delte, change edit this key. "error opening
key"

Ouch. The only other place to check is to see if what is in the
\windows\repair folder can help though it may be the registry files from the
original install.

Thanks Steve for the reply. I was able to do a recovery on a deleted restore
point from 3 weeks ago and used it. After I installed it the bad key in ENUM
was gone and Device Manager was back. Looking at the bad key, it had four
(NUL) characters at the end and with out any security tab avaliable it made
it impossible to delete. I just delivered it to the client.
I wish I had an easier way to delete the key. BartPE, Offline Registry
Editor and
dellNulKey could not delete it either, it could see the key but when it went
to delete it it said it could not be found. My thoughts are that a program
written with a Win API created this, and there should be a ways to delete it.

Thanks Again.
