delete line of special characters (*, +, -, etc) auto inserted by

Whenever I type three * or _, or -, or _ word inserts a line of these
characters in the document. I can't select these lines and therefore cannot
delete them. When i cut & paste the text adjacent to these pesky lines
reappear in the new document. How can I delete these lines inserted by Word?
How can I stop word from converting these three character combinations to
the lines to start with?

Example: Word converts === to a line that covers the width of the document
as shown below

I received an error when posting the earlier question and thought that it
never got posted, nor did I receive a response notification. That is why I
posted the question again. I have since read your helpful response to my
first question and thank you for your quick response. The solution you
suggested works great.
