Delete key

I have MS Word 2002, SP3. Somewhere along the line I have lost the ability
to highlight text and delete it by using only the Delete Key. This is also
the case in Excel. I have also lost the ability to use the Home Key to move
to the left of the text by just pushing the Home Key. How can these problems
be corrected...?
