Stan W.

I have a defective Gateway Computer that I am sending back. I want to make
sure that all of the data on the computer is removed before I send it back.
In a earlier post to this board, it was recommended that I delete a
partition (fdisk). I went to a website that has a tutorial on this.

It asks me to insert the Startup/Boot disk in the floppy drive and to
restart the computer. I do not have a floppy Startup/Boot disk. Where can I
get one of theses?

Also, after deleting the partition, what happens if I do not add a new
partition?

Thanks.

If you have a windows 98 or ME boot disk, you can use to
to boot the computer to an a: prompt. from there there
you can use fdisk to delete the non-dos partitions.

command @ the a:\ prompt: fdisk

follow the onscreen directions and delete all non-dos and
any dos partions. once this is done, the drive will be
blank.

So is this the equivalent of just doing a format of the drive?

So after adding a partition, can XP be reloaded on the computer? Will it be
as simple as booting with the XP restore disk in the computer after adding
the partition?

Stan, you said you wanted to get rid of the data not reload XP. Why are you
worried about what can be done about reloading XP if you are sending it
back? If you want to delete the partition and reload XP then just boot of
the XP cd and follow the prompts. If it's a restore cd then you will have
to follow the instructions that came with it for restoring XP. Once you
delete the partition all the old data is gone.
Didn't we just go through all this 3 days ago?

Put a blank floppy in the drive, right-click it and select format. Select
the option to copy system files. This will create a Windows ME version boot
diskette

If you have a restore CD you do not need to delete/create a partition. The
restore CD will do this for you.

Hi Norm,

Since I am sending it back I do not need to reload XP, I am just wondering
for myself for future knowledge.

Not quite. Even though the partitions may be gone, all the data
still remains and it *can* be recovered.

However, depending on how paranoid he is, what you suggest may be
good enough. Recovering the data after a reFDISK takes someone
who wants to do so; it's unlikely that anyone at Gateway will
want to do this.

You can get a variety of boot disks from Plato's site. The OP needs one that
has a current version of FDISK on it like a Windows 98 Start-up disk. The
bootable floppy that can be created by XP does not have FDISK.EXE or
FORMAT.COM so it is useless to him with respect to what he wishes to do.
Anyway the OP has asked his question a few days ago and I replied to him at
that time. He is asking again for some reason.

That's what I wanted to know, Harry...thanks.
