I have MS XPSP1 installed with Office 2003 with Outlook using MS Exchange
server. Everything was working fine until XP SP2 was installed. When
attempting to retrieve mail a pop-up message appears stating "Outlook is
trying to retrieve data from the MIcrosoft Exchange Server <servername>" and
there is quite a delay before completion. MS Firewall is turned off. Any
takers?

Rename "outcmd.dat" to "outcmd.old" and try opening Outlook with the
/nocustomize and/or /cleanreminders switches. You can also, in Outlook, click
Tools>Options>Other and disable Smart Tags at the bottom.
It also could be an issue on the network with UDP packets.

I have similar problem as well! I switched off SmartTag (couldn't find the
outcmd.dat file) but it didn't help. I found that it also doesn't work if I
connect to exchange via IMAP (Outlook express). It downloaded a few headers
and then halted.

But the funny thing is that it works perfectly when I'm connected to my
office LAN. It doesn't work if I connect to a wireless LAN router or any
wireless LAN (I tried over 10 wireless LAN and none works). What could SP2
have done to the UDP packet?

The folder and its contents are normally hidden. You have to go into Windows
Explorer, Tools, Folder options and unhide hidden files/folders and show file
extensions for known file types. Then do a search for the outcmd.dat file.

I managed to:
1. rename the file outcmd.dat to outcmd.old
2. open outlook with both switches on
3. turn off smart tag
4. set MTU to 1300
but no luck. The only suspicious thing that could go wrong is the cisco vpn
client. However, the outlook has been working until a few days ago when I
installed one of the auto update from microsoft. Both of my desktop and
laptop are now unable to retrieve mails with outlook and outlook express
(IMAP) via vpn.

What most weird is that I am able to upload or download large files from a
file server within the VPN! If it is strictly a MTU/UDP packet problem then I
should have problem in uploading/downloading files from a file server as well.

I am really scratching my head because I am still unable to identify the
problem...

Open Windows Explorer, enter

%AppData%\Microsoft\Outlook

in the Address field, and click Go.

Have kind of the same problem but it fixet now...try disable your windows
firewall completly...works for me....then use another firewall for protection
if needed. Sygate firewall is okay...
