I recently installed XP SP1. The performance of the machine has degraded
since then. My dial up connection hangs up after a while. I can not use
internet and listen to the music at the same time on my computer. If I
connect to internet while listening to music, the sound starts vibrating -
Task manager shows that internet explorer is using up a lot of processing
power and the machine seems unable to handle the load I am sure there is
nothing wrong with the audio drivers or the speakers etc because if I
disconnect the sounds becomes normal. It appears that IE is not working
write on the machine I have installed ALL the upgrades and installs
recommended by Microsoft on their windows updates page. I understand that
SP1 makes my system more secure but I believe only at a cost. Has anyone
else seen this degradation in performance? My machine is a compaq presario
700 US laptop - 900 MHZ - AMD Duron : Is that an ok configuration or I dont
have a powerful enough machine?

Thanks.

yes, I have run defrag once. I will try it again.
But why is it that only IE has a problem, other apps seem to run fine.

Have you run defrag since the upgrade? With that and the additional patches
you are making major changes to the files on the hard drive which is certain
to fragment it.
