defragmenting

I too have had my share of trouble defragmenting the drive. It seems to be
working ok until it finishes....then the graph shows a LOT of red....files
that could not be defraged. I click on review and get the message 'this
drive? should be defraged.' Or something to that affect. I have tried it
twice in the same run and got the same message. I have about 35% free space
and I know that the program will never defrag totally but it is leaving a lot
of files untouched. It seems, by going down the list that games I play are
the largest ones not defraged. Myst is the big one. Thanks for any help you
guys can give me.

Look at Diskeeper. This is a better defragmenter than the standard one in
XP. Xp's defragmenter does not defrag the paging file normally.

Has the drive ever (since formatting) been defragged with SpeedDisk or
another (non-MS) application?

Did you defrag in safe mode? The Built in defrag will do a efficient job only when no other programs interrupt its function. I personally wud recommend an auotmatic defragger too.
Here's an interesting link

Download and install this:

Nagware but does the job. Diskeeper 9, at $19.99, is worth the money.

If Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened
rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic
music.
