Defragmenting not moving folders :-(

When I upgraded to XP my disk was quite full.
Now I have cleaned up.
But no matter if I use "Disk defragmenter" or "Norton Speed Disk" the
folders are not defragmented (and some are at the end of the disk).
This causes lots of "disk seek" and slow startups and boot :-(
I use FAT32 file system (use NTFS at work and then it works).

PS! I have tried removing S, R and H attributes on all folders.

XP can not handle some files types and will not move them. Diskeeper 9.0
should solve that.

Hi,
Try a
http://www.google.com

for "VoptXP" (no quotes).
Just about the best defragmenting tool there's.
30 d. trial is offered at homepage.
Will even defrag the page file (in "Option/Tools").

As others have mentioned, you need to get a third-party defragging tool to
move folders, or to defrag the page file, or the MFT (assuming NTFS; FAT32
has not MFT).

Diskeeper versions 7+patches and 8, have worked for me. The latest version
is 9, which I do not yet have.

Norton's disk optimizer is a light-weight when dealing with XP, barely
better than the free defrag that comes with XP.

Try a web-search on "XP defrag" and you will find several vendors of such
dsoftware, and most have free trials.

But Norton SpeedDisk moved folders on FAT volumes in Win98.
Why does it not under XP (it still FAT32).

BTW: Found some compability problems between XP and 98 on FAT32.
Long file names containing the letter "Ø" (O slash) gives errors when
running Disk Doctor on Win98 (unused long file name). If I correct
these errors then the long file name is gone when seen from XP
(well well, only a problem for norwegianans and danes I guess :)

Norton is no longer good on optimisation in XP. I would suggest Perfect
Disk (www.raxco.com) which is about the only one that makes free space
contiguous; and also provides for an Off Line defrag (in effect for C at
net boot) which will optimise boot layout and defrag files that cannot
be moved with the system running

Noticed at home that defragmenting a FAT32 volume is MUCH faster when
I do it from Win98 (with Norton) that from XP (Norton og Microsoft).
Any reason for defragmenting beeing so terrible slow under XP :-(

(It's slow at work to, harddisk lamp doesn't blink very much, still
using 100% CPU, find it strange this would require more CPU in XP)
