When I run the disk defragmenter utility, the tool warns me that the disk free space is 27% (about 2Gb) , yet the usable space for the defragmenter is 0%, how is that possible ?

So your partition size is about 8 GB. If this is an NTFS
partition, about 1 GB of that space is taken up by the
MFT Reserved Zone and most defraggers can't used that space.

As well, space taken up by the deleted files in your recycle
bin is available for use for additional file storage, but not
available to the defragger.

There is little you can do about the MFTRZ, but you should
empty your recycle bin and try again.

one thing i might add...
is that even if you create *just* enough space to actually run defrag...
it won't actually be able to defragment your larger files!
(don't know if any 3rd party utilites work better)
