Defragmenter engine loss

I'm experiencing a consistent error in Defragmenter.

When I defragment my C: drive, after a few minutes, I get a message that
says "The connection to defragmenter engine has been lost. Restart
defragmentation."

After attempting to restart, I get the same message. Any suggestions for a
fix?

Defrag in safe mode, and stop as many running programs as possible.
