Defragmentation won't stop

About every other time, when I start the disk defragmentation utility
and later decide, that I need to access my system and do some work,
when I click "Pause" (or even when I click "Stop" and terminate the
program), the defragmentation won't actually stop. I can easily tell
that it did not because there is continuing system and disk activity
and in task manager there also still is a process "DfrgFat.exe".

Since I hate to simply "kill" a process that does such disk management
tasks (whose interruption I guess might potentially cause data loss),
I always leave this process running but then my system remains barely
usable for quite some time. Is there a way to overcome this bug and
tell the defragmenter to stop like NOW?

It usually does after some amount of time ensuring a safe "stop". If
yours never stops I don't know why.

Defragmenting is best done when you are not otherwise using the
system (like overnight) and any background apps like A-V or disk
monitoring tools should be stopped for best results.

Also, is the disk very full? That will slow Defrag to a crawl.
If you haven't run a CHKDSK in a while, do that first.

And I see you are on FAT32 there. My experience is with NTFS
primarily.

Make sure the screen saver is disabled and that you are
not running any other terminate and stay resident like
antivirus, systemworks etc....

Running it in safe mode can help too.
