defraging

Hi,
I have been told that if I defrag my computer after the
analizer says this drive does not need to be defraged
that it will ruin my drive or something to that effect,
is this true? I try to keep everything as clean as
possible, but when I heard this I wanted to know from the
experts about this.

Not at all. You've been told wrong, and very wrong. There may be
no benefit in defragging, but it never hurts.

You should defragment your drive when doing so results in a speed
up. Doing it any more often is a waste of time (although it
doesn't otherwise hurt).

Here's what I recommend. Pick some arbitrary interval--for
example once a month. Defragment on that interval a few times,
and assess whether the computer generally feels after doing so.
If the answer is yes, defrag more frequently. If the answer is
no, defrag less frequently.

Or just defrag once a month. That's a reasonable interval for
most people.
