defragging using diskeeper 8.0

C

chris

I am using XP pro and have a 30gb h/d. Whilst trying to
defrag same h/d with above programme, I receive the
following stop message:-

Fatal error -File \\?\C\80204AE\ASMS\10100\POLICY.

This stops my defragging and returns me to my desktop.
The analysis of the h/d is carried out o.k. but no defrag
(usually stops on about 32%)

Any help most gratefully appreciated.

Chris Yarker.

Chris,

Usually this indicates there is a disk error. Run chkdsk/r on the
problem partition. That should correct the error. Chkdsk/f may not
correct this one. If chkdsk itself aborts or hangs when it reaches
the bad block (but ONLY if chkdsk aborts or hangs), it indicates a
disk problem which chkdsk can't handle, and which will likely cause
more trouble in the future. You should then back up the partition and
reformat it to clean this up.

Many strange and baffling problems are solved by running chkdsk/r. I
run it on every one of my partitions at least once a month.
