Win XP SP2 with all updates, and clean machine.
My defrager does not work, there seem to be some registry files missing,
how can this problem be remedied ? (So I think)
Or is it possible that the defrager does not start because there is not enough
(90% freespace) to defrag ?
Thanks for any help...

I believe you have the freespace requirements inverted. It's 10%
free, not 90%. What exactly happens when you invoke Defrag ?
Does the program start, error-out or some other condition. Is it
the native defragmenter or a 3rd-Party utility. If you receive any
type of message or fault, it would help for you to repost that info.

It should tell you if there's not enough space left to derfag- I've seen the
message once on a disk that had 10% free space. You say you have 90%
freespace so it's unlikely if that is what you mean.

Also run the system file checker:
Start/Run
Type "cmd" ENTER
Type "sfc /scannow" ENTER
Have Windows XP CD ready in case it's needed.
This will check and replace if necessary damaged/missing system files.

Well it says 90% freespace, that's why I wrote it that way,and no
when I turn the defrager on,the program shows up,
exactly nothing happens, and no error signs
no popups nothing. It is the built in defrager.

btw you may need to change the directory holding sfc- usually
C:\Windows\SYSTEM32

Well under % Free Space, that's what it says 90%,
not sure what it all means, but I will run the system file checker.
Thank you...

Sorry, I may have misread your posting (Old Guy, with a table full
of glasses). So the program loads, This seems obvious, but did you
click the Defrag button on the bottom of the Defrag interface ?

Yep clicked the button at the bottom.first to analyze and then to defrag,
and nothing happens..

Well,I ran the sfc/scannow like you said,it ran all the way through,
at one time I think it said all files need to be copied to someplace,
and to retry, yet the scan went through, and after it was done I tried the
defrager again, but nothing happened...Oh and btw.
The filesystem is NTFS
Capacity=37.27 GB
Free Space=33.01 GB
% Free Space=90%

Not sure if this is needed, but that's what it says, you think I should try a
good
thirdparty defrager ? But that still wouldn't fix my problem with the one I
have.

Oh and I do not know how to change the directory holding sfc ,and now I wonder
if that may have been a vital part I missed !

Could be an indication of a Disk inconsistency. Do this to check your
drive's health. Click Start, Run (Type) Command [Press Enter]. When
the command prompt box opens, click inside it once to give it focus.
At the > Prompt (Type) Chkdsk C: [Press Enter]
At the conclusion of the cursory Chkdsk, it will inform you if the drive
is marked "Dirty" and recommend a Chkdsk C: /F. This does a repair
operation on the next reboot. If the disk drive is clean, then no info of
that type will appear in the summary.
NOTE: Chkdsk with Repair can cause system or user data to be
lost as part of the process. Be sure to have backups/images of
your system before running the Chkdsk /F

Check the size of dfrgntfs.exe and dfrgfat.exe in System32 folder.

Good Suggestion, I was thinking about just suggesting the OP
rename them to have WFP put back fresh copies. The issue
brings up a question I've never considered, does Defrag have
any disk status checking that would halt it from running ? Will
have to add that to my "Research" list.

Ok I did a Chkdsk C:/F and it checked 3 out of 3 parts, and came out good.
I remember running CHKDSK that had 5 parts, how do I run that again?

In Windows 98 days it would just restart and restart if there were issues.
In XP it may be what the op said. But it is not just disk issues which can
hold it up. Background running applications will do it too. In Windows 98
I always suggested doing it in Safe Mode. Maybe in XP also?

The cursory Chkdsk is only 3 phases. If it doesn't suggest an /F
then it isn't necessary. However, You can always queue up a full
Chkdsk by just doing a Chkdsk C: /F from a Command Prompt.
It will inform you that the volume is locked and would you like to
perform it on the next reboot. Just answer Y.

Change "to" the directory holding sfc. Don't do anything with sfc.exe. But
shouldn't be necessary as system32 is in your path.

You have more than enough free space. I really do not understand your sfc
message. But maybe that's right. You had the Windows XP in the CD-ROM
drive before you did the sfc command?

No do not look into a 3rd party defragger at this point. That will likely
just compound the issue.

Right on the sfc.exe...

No I put the windows -cd into the drive after the sfc command.

Ok ,I take it I do not need a third party defragger.

Actually I'm not sure if this is the way it should be,but in the registry
under Microsoft-- dfrg it said :
OptimizeComplete Reg_SZ NO
OptimizeError Reg_SZ Missing Registry Entries.

That's why I asked if there could be missing files in the registry, and how
do I replace them. If that is possible.
Running the sfc scannow didn't do anything to help..
Thanks you all..

Where exactly does it say this:

OptimizeComplete Reg_SZ NO
OptimizeError Reg_SZ Missing Registry Entries.

using regedit? I need to know the key location. Select the key where you
see this and right-click say Copy Key Name and paste the result here.

sfc has no efferct on the registry; s(ystem)f(ile)c(hecker).

I've seen these files made 0 byte and the symptoms you describe. Not the case here.

PS These are the actual defraggers, defrag.msc and defrag.exe are only the user interface.
