You likely have some corruption of your file system, go to My Computer,
right click your C drive and select properties, select the Tools tab, click
the Check Now button under the Error Checking section, select both check
boxes, click start. When you get the error select yes to allow the run on
the next reboot. Reboot your PC and let chkdsk run, DO NOT turn off your
computer once you do this, no matter how long it takes. Make note of any
errors and post back.

Mike maybe you are right.. but it seems everything is happening at
once..maybe norton 2008 anti-virus is not compatible with iolo system
mechanic , which might be harming things and also when I try to download
anything from windows upgrade no way..screen says internet download not
accessible

Before running chkdsk cleanup the disk. Either use Disk CleanUp or better
still cCleaner.

Hope this helps.

If the system calls for drive error checking, but the checks do not fix the
problem, the drive is most likely in the process of failing. When it does,
it will be instant and unrecoverable.. your choice..

A couple of tips..

1. Uninstall Norton AV and use Avast or Avira free versions..

2. Quit using crap like System Mechanic, registry cleaners, or anything
which promises a one click fix. They do not help and often leave problems in
their wake which may not be obvious until it comes to the time where you are
trying to fix the problems that the crap as mentioned causes..

Well I think I can help. I think there is a confusion between the programs
you are trying to run. In accessories, system tools there is scan disc and
defrag. It sounds like your computer is trying to run a scan disc and not a
disc defrag. Try this and see it it resolves the issue. Go to start, all
programs, accessories, system tools, and select disc defragmenter. Now if
this does not work try this instead. Click start computer and go to your C
drive. Right click and select properties. Go to the tools tab. Where it
says defragmentation click defragment now. Let me know if this helps so I
can improve my services.

Hi Kaja here agin, I kept reading this posting thread. The hard drive may
need replacing as one poster suggested although I would not give up on it yet
and I would highly reccommend that now it is of paramount importance to back
up all your files either via an external hard drive, USB flash drives, or CD
DVD rom discs in case your hard drive does crash. You mentioned Norton and I
have some thoughts on that. It could be possible that you do have a virus.
Norton sucks in my personal opinion I do not think it is incompatible with
your computer but it slows things down quite a bit. I would reccomend what I
think is the best antivirus, Avast. You can download a free trial at
http://www.avast.com
Download it, install it and run a full thorough scan. This will catch any
virus and you can remove it quarantine which Norton does offer this option
and a lot of virureses slip by Norton. Let me know if this helps so I can
Improve my services
Best Regards,
Kaja

Hi,
let me get this right - we ARE talking about an XP machine here, are
we? Because Scandisk is part of Win9X OS not XP! The little icon found
under the 'Tools' tab on a drives' properties page, with the words "This
option will check the volume for errors" starts Chkdsk not Scandisk - there
is no Scandisk with Win XP.
The problem is most likely caused by what Windows calls "one or more
unrecoverable file system errors". The only solution I have found to deal
with it, to date, is to start a second installation that has the problem
disk as a secondary drive. Then to run 'chkdsk /f ' from within this
other copy of Windows. For some, unknown reason, this clears the error.
Hope you have a better solution.
