Hello to all,
I have been trying to run the disk defragmenter, but it won't finish. I have
run disk cleaner in each user account then disk error check with no problems.
The analysis says to defragment the volume. I have tried in normal and safe
mode with the same results. It never makes it past 6%, and in both modes I
have left it running overnight, at least 20 hours. Any help will be
appreciated.

Is your disk NTFS or FAT32?

Hello Robert,
My system is NTFS.

If you have 5-10% free on the drive for the defrag process and disk
check does not show any problems, I can't think of any reason for your
problem. Typically this type of problem happens with essentially filled
drives or FAT32 drives on a WinXP system.

Check the Microsoft knowledge base and do a Google search. You may find
and answer.

I don't use Microsoft's defrag utility so I can't be sure, but the defrag from previous versions would have to start over every time
a change was made to the disk. Try running it safe mode and making sure that nothing else is running (kill explorer if need be).

Perhaps there is something else going on. As Robert said, it would have difficulty if there is not enough free space, so try to
free some up if that's the case. Another thing to try is using another defragmenter, even if it's just temporarily. Perhaps
another defrag utility can clean things up so that MS defrag can work again. Also, try checking for errors with chkdsk.

Alec S. is 100% correct windows defrag will restart any time anything
is written to the harddrive including your virtual mem file. Safe-mode
should work; however when I first encountered this error all I had to
do is shut down all the programs running in the tray like virus
scanners and other utilities. Also MS defrag is way slow you should try
norton speed disk...hope this helps..

There are also freeware defragmenters (yikes) but if you go the commercial defrag route, then I recommend Goldenbow's VoptXP. It is
a great defragmenter with lots of options and tools, and most importantly, it has the same style of interface that Win9x defrag had
(the little blocks). This means that you can see the data visually and have accurate feedback on the status, and much is complete,
plus it's fun/aggrivating to look at if you have nothing else to do and are waiting for it to finish.
