xp installation...when i try to run defrag, run or other system tools the
window appears briefly and disappears...runs fine in safe mode

Can you tell us if this happens with defrag if you open it from
C:\Windows\System32\derfag.msc

[[When you open System Configuration Utility [MSCONFIG], Registry Editor or
Task Manager, they flash for a second and quit. This symptom is caused by
Viruses.]]

Task Manager, MSCONFIG, or REGEDIT disappear while opening
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/ToolsQuit.htm

this is a friend's computer so i will try in a day or two...it does run in
safe mode if that helps

Hate to seem dense but one question on the workaround: does it mean rename
"taskmgr.exe" to something like "tskmgr.exe" and run it? i take this does not
solve the problem just allows you to run the utility?

Update your anti-virus software and run a full system scan. You might need
to start in Safe Mode to run your anti-virus software.

Some viruses like to ensconce themselves in areas Windows protects while
using them. Safe mode will prevent those application accesses, and hence
unprotect the viruses.

i gather the issue is that netsatt does not run in safe mode...so the idea is
to stop it from running by accessing the task mananger in normal mode and
then deleting the netstatt.exe file..apparently anti-virus programs do not
pick this up...i will try this one saturday as this is a friend's computer

i thought i would reprot back on the solution. i ran the alternate
taskmanager suggested in th link. it did not show netstatt running but it did
show norman antivirus and bitdefender running. neither of these programs even
were installed on this computer. so i killed those processes and deleted all
references to the programs on the harddrive and in the registry. this solved
the problems.
