Defrag Program

Hi Frank:

If your drive is deeply fragmanted, de-frag can take a long, long time-
especially if you have limited free space on the drive/partition in question.
Defrag must have >15% free space. Post back here with more info please.

I believe 3rd party de-frag programs use the XP utility to do the actual
work of defragmentation and so if it hangs in XP, it will hang using 3rd
party software too.

If you just want a different GUI here's a freeware defrag I have seen
posted on this forum:

You may want to run chkdisk to see if there are bad sectors on your drive
and let it attempt to repair them. Go to Start->Help & Support and enter
CHKDSK into the search box to learn how to use it.

As per your request for a defrag alternative - Raxco PerfectDisk is an
excellent tool www.raxco.com

The built in defrag does have a graphic display that shows what it's doing.
Personally I use Diskeeper and have done so for years. TTFN.

Hi Frank
My god is it the 14th June already - and look at the time :) :)
I have also read that sometimes Antivirus progs will slow down Diskcleanup
and defrag - Mcafee did for me.

Anyone know of a good defrag program I can use with XP Pro? The built-in
defrag program in XP hangs early into the process, with the hard disk light
constantly on. I'm looking for a program which shows graphically what is
going on during the process. Thanks in advance.

Maybe exit every single other bit of running software that can be shut down, then try.
