Defrag is slow

Hello,

I have Windows XP Pro installed on my machine. When I run Defrag, it starts
the analysation proccess, however, when it begins to defrag it stays at 1%,
even after hours of running.

I have Mcafee installed, but I disable it. I tried to look in msconfig,
under the start up tab... I see many weird files there.... But don't know
which ones are to be removed... I am scared to remove the wrong file...

Can someone please help me resolve this or point me to a link/FAQ which
resolves this problem.

Ross

Defrag isn't really needed in XP with NTFS. Either way, try to run it in
Safe Mode. Good luck and keep us posted.

Before running defrag, you need to run the disk cleanup utility 1st,then
defrag,
also you dont need to disable mcafee during either.

You're kidding, right? XP has the defrag program as an alternative to Spider
Solitaire?

Hi everyone, and thankyou for you replies!

OKAY,
I did run the disk clean up utlility before defraging and it does the same
thing in safe mode.

Do you think its Mcafee! Should I uninstall it ?

Last night I left defrag go all night, until this morning at 11:00AM and it
only had 4% done!!!!!!!

Is there anyone that already had this problem!!!

I've never before had a problem with Defrag with any windows OS.

I got a new computer and now have the same problem you have. I've
tried a lot of defrag programs none of them are doing the trick. They
all sit at some small percentage after a running all night.

I'm in the process of finding a Linux LiveCD that has a defrag program
and see if that works. I use FAT32 and not NTFS because it's an easier
to work with at times like this.

How large is your hard disk and how much free space? Before running Disk
Defragmenter run Disk CleanUp in each active User
Profile to remove Temporary Internet Files. If free disk space is an
issue select the More Options tab in Disk CleanUp and System Restore.

Whilst Disk Defragmenter is running try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring Task
Manager and select the
Performance Tab. What is the Commit Charge? What was the Peak? What RAM
memory do you have?

I use the XP defragger since I got XP a couple of months ago. However,
after analyzing the disk, it said I needed to defrag one time, over a month
ago, and each week I check it says I don't need to defrag, so I don't.
Since it doesn't defrag less than 5%, if the deframentation is not over 5%,
it will recommend not doing it.

Before I had XP, I had ME and used a utility called Diskeeper, which defrags
while you use the puter. It can work on a schedule, as it deems it
necessary, etc. It costs, IIRC, around $50, but since I had problems which
may or may not be attributed to Diskeeper, I don't and won't use anything
but the Windows defragger.

Notwithstanding it says you do not need to defragment what files are
listed as fragmented? Why the files you access and update regularly!

No. Kelly is NOy "kidding". She has better way to use her time here.

Hi Jerry!

OKAY, here is the data you requested...

Commit charge:
Total:197100
Limit:1278436
Peak:213280

RAM:
Total:522032

I was wondering if any of the the items in start up tab of msconfig should
be deleted....

Anyway get back... I don't know what else to do!!!!

Ross

The figures from Task Manager look OK. I would not recommend deleting
items from the start up folder.

I am not clear what you have done regarding my other suggestions?

How large is your hard disk and how much free space? Before running Disk
Defragmenter run Disk CleanUp in each active User Profile to remove
Temporary Internet Files. If free disk space is an issue ( less than 15%
free space ) select the More Options tab in Disk CleanUp and System
Restore.

Some further thoughts.

Run chkdsk. In Windows Explorer right click on the drive and select
Properties, Tools, Error Checker.

Have you tried running Disk Defragmenter in Safe Mode? An earlier post
by you mentioned safe mode but I am not sure whether you meant that you
ran Disk CleanUp or Disk Defragmenter?

Ross,

Can you post us a list of all your Processes from Task Manager?

Thanks.

Just a thought, but is the drive set to use DMA and is it working?
Device Manager and check the IDE channel Properties for transfer Mode.
(Advanced settings) If it's using PIO for the device its going to be
real slow.

Hi, Gerry...

OKAY,

My harddrive is 80G
22G used
57G Free

I only tried Defrag in safe mode. I will try disk clean up in safe mode
right after this post!
I did try to run disk clean up in normal mode and still nothing....
And yes I did run chkdsk as you mention it ... I did this last night.. and
still nothing.

I am wondering if this is not an XP issue or if Defrag does this when it
sees that there is really no need to defrag the Hard drive.... I don't know...

All I know is that quite a few people have this problem and no one knows how
to get rid of this DEFRAG MAL FUNCTION I call it!!!!

And you know what I REALLY DON'T FEEL OR HAVE THE TIME OR ENERYGY TO
RE-FORMAT MY HARD DRIVE RIGHT NOW!!!!!!

I was wondering if I un-install Mcafee, I know you or in one of the posts
someone discouraged this, however these virus scan programs have caused me
alot of headaches in the passed.

SO I have tried:
Running mcafee in normal and safe mode,
Running adaware in normal and safe mode,
Running Noadaware in normal and safe mode,
Running TuneUp utility in normal and safe mode,
Running Disk clean up in normal but not in safe mode, (I will try that after
this post)
Running CHKDSK through Windows C: properties
Running Defrag in normal and safe mode, (Both flopped!)

The commit and Ram parameters seem OKAY
I even tried SFC/ scannow! incase there would be some file coruption deep in
the Windows underworld!

I don't anymore man!
Ross!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP!

Can you post a list of all your running processes before you run the defrag,
please??
