Defrag error: "Cannot start defrag"

I get the above error when trying to run the defragmentation tool in WinXP.
Can anyone advise on what to do to fix this problem?

As Will suggested, make sure you have plenty of empty drive space
available. A percentage is not too usefull not knowing the size of the
drive. However, if after you make sure you have plenty of free drive
space, (I'd say at least 1/3 free space of the total drive, try to
defrag in the safe mode and see what happens.

Follow up to my previous message I omitted an important part.
Make sure you have administrator priviledge to the computer too.
