Defrag and Multiple drives

Can't select to defrag more than 1 drive in the defragment utility.

Please upgrade this utility so all drives can be selected in a defrag.

I think that it would be an easy thing for MS to do this. However, I believe
you should also indicate your choice concerning the process. Do you want all
the selected drives to be defragged simultaneously, or would it be
acceptable if they arranged the selected drives to do it sequentially?

good question. Vista has the capabilities to select multiple drives for
defrag. I think it does it sequentially. What ever it best, which depends
on how good the computer is, probably best if it was done sequentially if you
are working while it defrags but perhaps it would be quicker if it
defragmented the drives simultaneously...

My vote is for it to defragment the drives sequentially so system resources
aren't too heavily used.

All I want is to be able to start a defrag, walk away, and come back to find
all drives defragmented. Not have to want and manually select to defrag each
drive.

Also it's time to get rid of the notificaton that comes up after the
defragment button is clicked saying that the drive doesn't need to be
defragmented. If I didn't want to do a defrag I wouldn't have opned the
application and clicked defragment!
The notification could at least have a count down that gives the user a
chance to not defragment and when it times out it goes ahead with
defragmenting.

Windows XP's Defragment utility requires your presence (it shouldn't at all
once started) and too much manual fiddling.

MS is not going to update the XP defragger. Not when they are bus
trying to push people to Vista and the upcoming Windows 7. Once Win
is released, I doubt XP will see any love from MS, especially if
proves to be a quick success.

If you want to defrag multiple drives in XP simultaneously, look for
commercial defrag utility like Diskeeper. I run Diskeeper 2009 pro, an
I just leave it on auto defrag mode..I cant be bothered to manuall
defrag. But my colleague runs Diskeeper 2009 in manual/scheduled mode
and it defrags both his hard drives simultaneously without any problem
whatsoever

People from Microsoft never post to these newsgroups so I very much
doubt whether your request will ever be picked up.

All development relating to Windows XP has ceased so there will not be
any further changes other than security updates.

In theory you can use Task Scheduler to run the Microsoft Disk
Defragmenter. It is not something I have tried.

It is good practice to run Disk CleanUp ( or better still cCleaner )
before running Disk Defragmenter.

In Vista, Disk Defragmenter runs in the background without user
intervention. However, the user interface is awful and it very difficult
to know how effective it is.

An interesting relatively new entrant to the market is Defraggler
(freeware for home users) which I am currently testing. It is worth
