Hello,

A user's PC had stopped associating MS Office document extensions with their
MS Office applications. I've tried using "Open With" and ensuring that
"Always use this program to open...." but it's not reassocations these
files.

The user is part of the local Administrators group.

Any ideas?

Are you using central group policies for all users? That could be
causing the problem.

Manoj,

Can you please expand on your thought? If we are using central group
policies I have not made any changes to them recently.

Thanks,

AJ

Hi,

Is your computer using central policies? We have a network where we
use ISA server to control all users settings. If you are making any
changes in file association and it is not working, it means it is
getting overridden by group policies. Is it understand now?

Peter,

Perhaps I'm missing something here but, these fixes appear to be for
associations native to the Windows OS, before installing third party apps
like MS Office. And a review of the reg files that change native
associations aren't intuitive enough (and I'm not smart enough) for me to
figure out reg edits for Word and Excel.

Thanks,

AJ

Manoj,

Yes, we use group policies (default) from a corporate server (Win2008). But
I've made very few edits to GP and none that have anything to do with this,
as far as I can tell.

Thanks,

AJ

Files reassociated; Via Control Panel\Add/Remove Programs I clicked the
Repair button for MS Office and it appears to have fixed the issue.

Unfortunately the icons are still broken. Thought they would have been fixed
along with the file association routine. Working on that now.

- AJ

AJ,
If the paths to the M$ Office apps & association have been fixed,
it's probably just a matter of rebooting to see the [proper] icons
appear.

Tim,

The Repair procedure I mentioned previously required a reboot. I'll try
again though.

Thanks,

AJ

AJ,
Then you are probably right in assuming the icons are [truly]
missing.

If you include the path to your Office [.exe] applications in your next
post, I will write some registry 'fixes' for the icons.

These will be in the form of posting 'copy and paste' file contents, for
you to make .reg files from.

Tim,

The location for Excel.exe and Winword.exe is:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12

Thanks!

Are you using Windows Vista by any chance?

I looked at the 'properties' of your posts, and find that you're using
'Windows Mail' - thought that was available only to Vista users, but I
could be wrong.

I was wondering if you were using OE - so that I could simply 'attach'
the .reg file to the post so that you could retrieve it.

I don't know if you can do that in 'Windows Mail'.

One more note before I post the contents of the .reg file.

I have Office 2003 and you have 2007, so I don't know if these registry
entries will cover all the icons.

If it does not work for all the icons, maybe you should consider using
the :

'Control Panel' > 'Folder Options' > 'File Types'

....option, to try to change the associated icons for each file type.
Since the program association has been mended, maybe the icon can be
edited and will stick???

However, there's no harm in trying this reg file, so here goes :

------------------------- copy between lines -------------------------

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.8\DefaultIcon]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\Office12\\WINWORD.EXE\",15"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.12\DefaultIcon]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\Office12\\WINWORD.EXE\",15"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Access.Application.12\DefaultIcon]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\Office12\\WINWORD.EXE\",15"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.12\DefaultIcon]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\Office12\\EXCEL.EXE\",25"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00020810-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\DefaultIcon]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\Office12\\EXCEL.EXE\",25"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PowerPoint.Show.12\DefaultIcon]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\Office12\\POWERPNT.EXE\",9"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PowerPoint.Show.8\DefaultIcon]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\Office12\\POWERPNT.EXE\",9"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Publisher.Document.11\DefaultIcon]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\Office12\\MSPUB.EXE\",2"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Publisher.Document.12\DefaultIcon]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\Office12\\MSPUB.EXE\",2"

------------------------- copy between lines -------------------------

....each entry is composed of two lines, so if there appears to be a
group of three lines together - line-wrap has split a line and you must
rectify it by ensuring there are no more than 28 lines in total
(including the regedit header and blank separating lines)
