i wish to set default mpg player in xp registry for every logon user of the
xp machine.

could you let me know the location of registry to be amended? thanks.

defaults for xp should be set as follows ;
go to control panel and click on add/remove
on left click on "set program access and defaults
select custom
go down thru each one and select the listed one you want
click on ok
