Default margins lost

Word 2007 on XP Pro
I have set my default margins twice now yet the settings are lost when I
open word again. Am I missing something?
Here are the steps I take:
1. Set my margins to .5
2. Click on Margins/Custom Margins
3. Select Default at the bottom

Appreciate any help.
Thanks!

Make sure you are adjusting the margins in a "blank" document. Sometimes I
have found that if I adjust the margins while in a document, the settings
(even the default button) stays with the document rather than the
Normal.dotm.

When you are in the Custom Margin dialog box, be sure that the margins say
the .5" all the way around before you click the Default button.

Another reason the new "default" settings don't take would be due to an
add-in such as PDFMaker conflicting. If you still can't get the setting to
take - open the Normal.dotm template directly. You should be able to find
your Normal.dotm template at : C:\Documents and
Settings\[UserName]\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

Thank you so much Dawn. I opened the normal file itself to do it. It would
not let me save over it, so I saved it as normal1.dotm then delelted the
other and renamed this one. It worked great. Appreciate your help!

Great Nancy -

I would take a copy of your changes and save it somewhere, because if Word
decides that your Normal.dotm template ever becomes corrupted, you will end
up with the Microsoft default template again.
