is there a way to change the default font for all
powerpoint presentations rather than for the current
presentation?

Not really, since the default font is set in the template. If all of your
presentations are based on the same template, then yes, you can set the
default font in that template by the following:

1. Open PowerPoint and then open the template file.
2. Go to View > Master > Slide Master.
3. Select the Text tool and click in an unused area of the slide.
4. Go to Format > Font and set it to the Font Style, size, color, etc. and
then check the box labeled "Default for new objects".
5. Click OK.
6. Go to View > Normal.
7. Go to File > Save As.
8. Select Design Template (*.pot) as the File Type.
9. Click Save.

Now, every time you apply that template to a presentation the default font
will be set to your preference.
