The below suggestion helped, but the text still has a shadow. Is there a
way to get rid of it as a default in the shape?

Do I have to create every shape and save as default?

To get rid of the shadow, click Format > Font. Uncheck Shadow and click OK.
Next, click View > Toolbars > Shadow Settings. Off the shadow setting.

Not to forget that you will need to set it to default also (Click Draw > Set
Autoshape Defaults).
