default and alternate path

Hi,
I am working on Office 2000. I changed the Default file location to the
required location, and provided the default file loccation path in the
Alternate startup file location: i.e "c:\Documents and Settings\user name\My
documents
Now when I try to open the excel file... all the file which contains in
the My Document files opens up whether it is a word excel or any other file.
givining error messages. If I remove the Alternate startup file location
then there is no any error... it opens only in the defoault file location
which we have provided. I need to know why this is happening.

KAH

You've answered the question yourself. The default save directory is purely
used as a shortcut when you try to save a new workbook. The alternate
start-up directory is if, for example you have a network with a central
repository for workbooks which should be started by excel. By default this
is xlStart, where personal.xls and template start-up add-ins are stored.
Generally, this box should be empty otherwise it tries to start up files in
the folder shown, irrespective of type
