Decompressed desktop! Help!

Hi folks,

First time using Microsoft discussion groups for help... sorry if this is in
the wrong forum.

I accidentally decompressed by desktop and there are files all over the
place. I tried putting them back in my "users/Steve/desktop" folder but I'm
told that the source and destination are the same file and my only choice is
to cancel.

This isn't critical, but I would like to enjoy my background again and not
have a cluttered desktop! How do I put all those files back?

Thanks! Steve

Your Users/Steve/Desktop folder *is* your desktop. You must move the
clutter to a different folder, in, say, the Documents folder.

If this happened as part of a program install, you should uninstall and
reinstall.

Thanks Charlie! I'll try it. Will that affect anything if those files are
put somewhere else? To be honest, I don't even know what they're for.

Peter, I'm not sure I can. There was an .exe on my desktop called
"7000-VISTA-32-A.exe" that appeared after my techie friend did some "cleaning
up" of my laptop. It's new and I didn't want to spend the $100 that some
retailers charge to get rid of extra 3rd party junk that gets on their
through deals from manufacturers.

So, I ran it thinking it was used to stop certain popups that I get at
startup. And then *poof* about 100 files that are otherwise unidentifiable
to me showed up. That's what I get for being curious.

Thanks.

OK, you had a program on your desktop and you ran it. It unpacked itself
onto your desktop. You did not "decompress" your desktop. Simply delete
all the extra files the executable put on your desktop. They do not
belong to Vista so you don't need to "put them back" anywhere. It might
be wise of you to ask your techie friend what the executable was.

OK. Apparently that .exe file is a self extracting archive (it may contain
Brother printer drivers). You should keep the .exe file, but move it to a
different folder like Users\Steve\Downloads. You can then safely delete
the remaining clutter.
