Dear All ......
I need an AV application that .....
1) will work well with Windows'98
2) provides good on-demand (manual) scanning of
user selectable files, folders or drives
3) posts frequent incremental updates that can be
downloaded ( in 'exe' or 'zip' format ) and updated
manually
4) preferably includes trojan and other malware in its
virus database
5) is not very expensive
Thank you for any advise, suggestions or links.

Avast does this
3) posts frequent incremental updates that can be

Avast has small, frequent updates. Can download manually or automatically,
installs automatically.
4) preferably includes trojan and other malware in its
virus database

Avast includes some of this. Better programs for this are:

AdAware, <http://lavasoft.element5.com/software/adaware/>
Spybot Search & Destroy, <http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html>

All of the above are free for the downloading.

Could you provide a link to these downloadable virus
definition files for download and manual updating?
thnx! ..... :)

The choice of manual or automatic updating is made in avast! settings > Update
(Basic). Installation of the updates into the program is automatic,
apparently no provision is made for manual installation of the update.

To answer your question:
"Information about current update:
Total time: 34 s

- Vps: Updated
(previous version: 0631-3, updated version: 0632-0)

Server: download61.avast.com (209.85.5.41:80)
Downloaded files: 8 (43.44 KB)
Download time: 1 s"

What, exactly, do you mean by "manual updating"?

I too am not sure why you want to be bothered with manual updating the
definition files. Letting Avast do it by itself is quite painless. I've
been using Avast for several years and auto-updating has never failed.

And as Ernie B. mentioned, the daily updates are quite small in size -
far smaller than any other anti-virus app I am aware of. Apparently, the
Avast programmers know how to incrementally update a database. <g>

Hi!
Due to the sensitive nature of some of the data on the computer, we
are reluctant to open a bi-diretional port for auto-updating by a
third party.
Manual updating takes the form of downloading a "zip" file, extracting
it into a folder and manually pointing the AV application to the files
that have been extracted from the "zip" file for (local) auto-update.

Ok, that sounds like a reasonable request.

auto-update.

I don't see that a zip file type update can be done, but I did find this
in the Help file:

Setting the automatic update feature of virus database and avast!
program

1. In the Simple User Interface, click the text showing the current
setting of automatic updates (e.g. Manual).
2. Use the radio button to set the required option.
3. Confirm it by the OK button.

You can do manual updates by going to the user settings and selecting
"Updates (Basic)", then selecting Manual. Maybe this would satisfy your
needs?

Okay. Two places to look for further information....

<http://forum.avast.com/>. You must register, free, in order to post to the
forum.

Professional edition, <http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_professional.html>,
may have an update scheme that meets your needs. Professional isn't free but
there is a 30 day trial period.

I did a little more digging, found
<http://www.avast.com/eng/update_avast_4_vps.html>. You can apparently
download an update program, VpsUpd.exe, that will allow you to install updates
with your computer isolated from the Internet. The updates could be
downloaded separately, even with another computer.
