ddr ram speed?

I've got an older Athlon XP 2800 barton system with 1.5 gigs of ram.
The ram is all PC3200 so it should be able to run at 400mhz, but when I
run sandrasoft or cpuz it tells me its running at 167mhz. I'm not sure
if its running 167 or 167x2 multiplyer (333 mhz). On the BIOS I have
selected 400mhz.

Does this mean my system is incapable or running 400mhz ram (which I
assume will be 200mhz x 2)? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The 2800 has a Front-side bus speed of 333mHz.
That is 166*2.
The BIOS must have picked up the setting error of 200mHz.
Sandra ( in CPU&BIOS Information) should be showing a Speed of 2.083mHz.
If not, the multiplier may be set wrong.

Since we don't know the mother board we can only guess.

Hi thanks for the reply.

Its a kt400. The FSB is 2x167 with the memory bus running at 2x166.
I'm assuming this is correct and I cant get the memory to run at 200x2
because the FSB is 166 not 200. Is this correct?

Oh yes, I remenber that board by SOYO.

You cannot get the memory to run at 2X200 becouse the board does not offer a
200mHz clock.
You have set the highest speed the board is capable of.

That board does not have the capability to run at 200mHz. I have no idea why
they mention that speed.
The KT400 chip set could not go to 200mHz. See the SOYO site. There was a
big discussion about this some time ago.

In any event, the CPU would not run at 2X200 any way..
The controlling factor is the CPU, it will not run much over 266mHz. The
memory (PC3200) is over kill but thats not bad.

It is good machine and you will enjoy the speed. .
