DDR and DDR2

Can DDR2 RAM be used on a DDR MB if I don't mind the speed downgrade?
 
I believe that there is mechanical interference. One won't plug into an
unmatched socket.

One would choose a mainboard with slots for DDR1 and DDR2 (not both at
the same time) by ASRock.
