DCOM Error

Stephen K. Brown

Had computer crash. Upon restart found that primary drive (formerly E:) is
now C: Drive has WinXP Pro with SP2 and all updates, one partition. Also
have 2nd drive, which was C: before crash, now D:, one partition. Was able
to finally get good XPPro SP2 and all updates installed on new D: Booting
from new C:, boot and loading of programs is
normal. All programs load. At very end of program load, however, error
window appears: "This system is shutting down. Please save all work in
progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was
initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. Time before shutdown counter with 60
seconds commences. Message states: "Windows must now restart because the
DCOM Server Process Launcher service terminated unexpectantly". Computer
then restarts. Have done Norton virus scan, Microsoft AntiSpyware scan,
Ad-aware scan, Spybot Search & Destroy scan. All with latest (3/16/05)
definitions. All clean.

Could not find any answers via Google search or in KB. Is there a repair
for this? Thanks for all responses!

go to start/run, type: SHUTDOWN -A to stop the restarting.

Go to the Windows Update site (start/all programs/, at the top), and find the "Malicious Software Removal Tool."

Mark,

Malicious Software Removal Tool did not find any "malware" Also ran
complete Spy Sweeper scan; also found nothing. Have also found that Windows
Installer is apparently broken. Is there a way to repair Windows Installer
without either completely reinstalling Windows or doing a repair Windows
installation? Thanks for your help.

Mark,

Had previously downloaded the Windows Installer CleanUp Unility, but did not
select any of the programs. Didn't want to "break" any of my installed
programs. Anyway, ran the Utility with all programs selected. Ran Windows
update. Found one security update. After manually starting Automantic
Updates and Background Intgelligent Transfer Service in
Start>Run>Settings>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services (both default
to stop on reboot - this apparently is another problem), the Windows update
is downloaded, but then still fails to install. Event viewer does show the
installation failure error under either Application or Services.

What next? Appreciate your continued assistance!

Service start failure is some hardware driver problem. My try at finding something would be 'roll back driver (device manager,
device properties, driver tab, button) SP2 probably put in a new driver.

Not all old hardware is running within SP2's new security settings, and many Other Equipment Manufacturers(OEM) are issuing new
drivers for SP2..

Mark,

Previous to crash, system had been operating OK with SP2 installed. All
devices had latest manufacturer's drivers installed. Have found that a
number of other programs and files are now corrupted, particularly many
music .mp3, .ape, .mpc etc files. I beginning to think that, even though
this Windows installation boots, its sufficiently corrupted that I'll never
fix everything. Believe I'll try a repair installation to see if that
solves my problems before "going all the way" to a reformat. Am sort of a
freeware/shareware "junkie" and really hate to have to reinstall most of
this stuff again!!

Anyway, thanks for your help!
